Letter from a girl given a Covered with Love kit:

“Thank you so much for the gift bag with all the amazing things inside! It really means alot to me, especially the Bible. My parents threw away my Bible, saying it was worthless. My new foster mom and I were sharing one she has owned for almost 30 years! So this Bible is helping me a lot! Thank you so much again.”

Imagine...

It’s the middle of night.  Flashing lights, a pounding on the door and yelling erupt as you are pulled from your warm bed by armed police officers.  Your parents are handcuffed and taken away in a police car. A case worker from Child Protective Services tells you to come with her because your home is not safe.  You are not allowed to take anything with you - not even your teddy bear.  The drugs in your home have poisoned everything.  Imagine your fear as you are delivered to a new “home”,  and the sadness you feel as you realize everything you knew is gone. The caseworker gives you a backpack: inside is a change of clothes, basic toiletries, a teddy bear and a soft, handmade  blanket, and a Bible. You feel comforted knowing someone thought of you enough to give you a few things to call your own as your family rebuilds their future.

What Is Covered With Love?

Frequently, when children are removed from dangerous home situations, either drug-related or due to abuse, they are not able to keep many possessions. In homes where drugs are being produced, everything in the home may have to be destroyed.  In domestic violence situations, women may flee home with little more than the clothes they are wearing.  Covered With Love care kits provide the first building blocks for their future. Each kit contains basic hygiene items (toothbrush, soap, shampoo, comb/brush, etc.), a stuffed animal, socks, underwear, pajamas, a book, a homemade blanket and a Bible. Since 2009, the DCIC has provided over 600 Covered With Love care kits to children and women in this time of extreme crisis.

Covered with Love kits are distributed in:
  • DeKalb County (also serving LaGrange County)
  • Kosciusko County
  • Steuben County
  • Noble County
  • Whitley County
  • Defiance County, Ohio (also serving Paulding County)

Distribution Partners
  • Indiana Department of Child Services
  • DeKalb Health
  • Domestic Violence Task Force
  • Bowen Center

Take Action

  • Encourage your church, business or fraternal organization to conduct a donation drive to help provide for children and women in their greatest time of anxiety and need.
  • Purchase Bibles for children, youth or young adults to be included in each kit.
  • Create homemade blankets with your quilting, knitting or tying skills.
